Some of Our Accomplishments

- Food and Farming sponsored our first conference, Collaborating on a Food and Farm Bill, in June 2005. Co-sponsorship was very diverse: from the Western Growers Association to Defenders of Wildlife. Thirty-two speakers presented in 5 panels, including former and current Secretaries of Agriculture. Over 110 people attended, surpassing our goal of 100 participants. Evaluations were quite positive and people previously not engaged in Food and Farming became part of our campaign.
- Food and Farming sponsored a panel at the 2005 Eco-Farm Conference on the US Farm Bill and its importance to California. Participants included Martha Noble, Sustainable Agriculture Coalition; Dennis Albiani, Governor Schwarzenegger’s office; Jasper Hempel, Western Growers. Over 50 people attended.
- Food and Farming organized our Sustainable Agriculture Congress, the 2005 membership meeting, with break out sessions on Farm Bill and leveraging funds for sustainable agriculture at the University of California and the California State University System. We garnered significant interest and commitment for further work on Farm Bill 2007. Twenty-nine organizations were represented.
- Food and Farming’s policy director co-chairs the Farm and Ranchland Stewardship Workgroup of the W.K. Kellogg-funded Farm and Food Policy Project and is a member of UC Davis Dean’s Advisory Council and the CalFed Working Lands Subcommittee. She chairs subcommittees and working groups of the California Roundtable for Agriculture and Environment, specifically focusing on University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources and University of California budget issues.
- Food and Farming strengthened relationships with new allies, partners and collaborators on Farm Bill work, such as Environmental Defense, Defenders of Wildlife, American Farmland Trust, Western Growers, and California Farm Bureau Federation.
- Due to Food and Farming's efforts, UC ANR made some significant changes to its operation, all directly benefiting sustainable agriculture in California. UC Davis responded to expressed needs of agricultural sustainability by establishing the Agricultural Sustainability Institute.
